Carlos Slinger, known globally as DJ Soul Slinger, was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, where his eclectic sound was shaped by diverse cultural influences. Beginning his DJ career in 1985, he blended genres like funk, house, hip hop, and reggae, establishing himself as a pioneer in São Paulo’s music scene. In 1989, he moved to New York City, where his career took off, becoming a prominent figure in the underground rave and drum and bass movements throughout the 1990s.
In 1990, Soul Slinger co-founded Liquid Sky, a record store in Manhattan’s Lower East Side that became a cultural hub for the U.S. rave scene. More than just a store, Liquid Sky was a blend of music, fashion, and counterculture. Four years later, he launched Jungle Sky Records, which provided a platform for American drum and bass artists and played a critical role in introducing the jungle sound to the U.S.
Soul Slinger’s influence extended beyond music into the fashion world, as Liquid Sky became a lifestyle brand for ravers, merging streetwear with psychedelic elements. His impact also crossed into environmental activism. In 2000, he co-founded the ECOSYSTEM Festival in Brazil, an event that merged music with environmental awareness, drawing attention to the Amazon rainforest’s preservation.
Throughout his career, DJ Soul Slinger has collaborated with a wide array of influential artists, further cementing his legacy as a boundary-pushing pioneer. His ability to merge music, fashion, and activism has left a lasting impact on global rave culture and continues to shape his work today.
